MIX’s review of Gilding the Lily:
Miffed by the lavish excess of his work, critics accused artist Chris Andrews of “gilding the lily.” With a vengeance, Andrew claims the fabulous phrase as his own, building a darkened multi-channel audio/video hall of mirrors to hold various personae of the artist. Each glitter-rococo “mirror” is made from video projected within an 4’x8’ round frame and reveals its own daemon/avatar. The sound–derived from a chant in Shakespeare’s King John, the original source of the work’s title–is specific to each mirror-world, and merges to create a choir that unites the characters. Child-vampire drag queens! Divine swamp mutants! Excess is ubiquitous. Space-time is permeable. Camp everything.
