Scott N Andrew

Scott Andrew’s media design practice is defined by the full integration of digital art into the ephemeral energy of live performance. His work moves beyond traditional projection, establishing media as a co-creative force that actively informs the dramaturgy of dance, theater, and spectacle.

Andrew specializes in creating dynamic visual environments, utilizing sophisticated tools including video mapping, live capture, custom animation, and AI-generated content. This technical vocabulary is consistently deployed to explore themes of queer futurity, celebrate divas and icons, and realize visually stunning, maximalist spectacles.

This section highlights a portfolio of diverse projects:

  • Dance & Collaborative Works: He provided the visual landscape for The Marthaodyssey (a 2024 NDP Finalist that recontextualizes Martha Graham's archive with Madonna's music in collaboration with Jesse Factor), the profound community-focused movement piece sum of y’all (PearlArts Movement & Sound), as well as UnderlandxAlice (Kontara Morphis) and Dragonfly Dawn (Joanna Abel), focusing on fully immersing the audience in the work's speculative narrative.
  • Theater & Opera: He has designed intricate video systems and compelling visual content for new stage productions, including the timely political drama First Lady (PICT Classic Theatre) and the contemporary opera Looking at You (Carnegie Mellon University School of Music).
  • Performance & Nightlife: This work also encompasses high-profile annual events, including the large-scale multi-channel video installations for the House Party benefit at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater, media design for the Pittsburgh Opera Annual Fashion Show, and performing live improvisational visuals as his VJ persona, Fagnelly.

These collaborations underscore Scott Andrew’s belief that the live stage is the most gratifying context for his work to exist, providing a platform to elevate and embellish works by underrepresented voices.
