A multi-channel video installation and live performance piece, The Diva Saga: The Legend of the Worst Drag Queen, questions constructions of sexuality, gender, and identity in a digital age and examines how Veronica Bleaus became the self-proclaimed ‘worst drag queen.’ Lampooning normative and restrictive constructions of sex, artistic judgment, and popular culture, The Diva Saga draws heavily from numerous visual and aural storytelling mediums like comic books, Japanese anime, video games, music videos, and high fantasy.

A series of campy confrontations between a live Veronica and the avatars of drag—digital identities projected on stage (also played by Veronica)—the live and digital Veronicas clash in their respective interpretations, battling each other in a fantastic, campy visual and sonic narrative. A Drag Saga uses live and digital performance to gesture to and capture the importance of camp and divas in queer processes of self-making and alternative identity construction.

TQ Live! presents a queer evening of dazzling performance, dance, poetry, comedy, resplendent fantasies, music, and more. This fifth annual performance series features artists and performers from the many LGBTQIA communities in the Pittsburgh region. This program is produced by Scott Andrew, Joseph Hall, and Suzie Silver. This project is supported in part by the Carnegie Mellon University School of Art, the Center for the Arts in Society, the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry and the Sylvia and David Steiner Speaker Series, and additional support from the 5801 Video Lounge & Café’s ‘Ladies Who Drag Brunch’ and Richard Parskian.

Hosted by Joseph Hall, this year’s line-up includes performances by Anna Azizzy, Amelia Bande, Tsohil Bhatia, Jesse Factor, Dani Janae, and DJ FREETER, with additional surprise video and performance works. @ The Andy Warhol Museum

Some select shots from last night’s excerpted performance of The Diva Saga @fail_safe_pgh

Fail-Safe is a (new) recurring variety performance show.  

Fail-Safe invites artists with works-in-progress to present new performances in a supportive environment. The curated performance series was created with the intention to become a safe space for failure - a safe space to perform works across fields that may not be fully figured out yet. In addition to presenting live performances in their early stages, Fail-Safe incorporates conversation about performance into the framework of the event itself. In a true variety show fashion, performances may span the fields of performance art, cabaret, experimental sound art, interdisciplinary theater, digitally mediated performance, readings, dance and more.

Our first free performance event will take place at 7:30pm on June 22nd at Glitter Box Theater, an accessible artist-run community theater space.

In the spirit of Pride, I’m excited to announce a show that I’ll be staging this September at Washington College, MD with my long-time collaborator, John Musser @camp_ham. After several years of shooting and planning, we’re ready to debut The Diva Saga, the Legend of the Worst Drag Queen, which tells the story of how Veronica Bleaus emerged out of the void to battle, consume, and absorb all the great divas. Special thanks to Alicia Kozma @unicorncuddles for inviting us to debut this new work, and also to @wacdrama - the theater department faculty, staff, and students at Washington College for their help in making this come together. We can’t wait to get this show up and running! 

Opening at SPACE on Friday, May 31st with an official reception on Friday, July 12 at 5:30pm (along with the Gallery Crawl and Arts Festival)

Streaming Space will feature videos by 14 Pittsburgh artists, including choreographers, filmmakers, performers, visual and healing artists.  The work will vary from animation to performance and documentary.  Curated by Alisha B. Wormsley and Ricardo Iamuuri Robinson.
