Organized by Scott Andrew

Join us for a Good Friday evening of queer dramatic fantasy, excess, and opulence infused with storytelling by celebrated performance artist, and Activated Anamorphs visiting artist of 2022, Darrell Thorne. Darrell will present a new live performance followed by a discussion with local artist Heidi Wiren Bartlett.

Darrell Thorne (b. 1976, Branson, Missouri) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He enjoys exploring the many dualities and contradictions that exist in all facets of society, utilizing fantasy, camp, and beauty (and plenty of mirrors) to reflect on what unites and divides us. Through song, spoken word, movement, and dance, coupled with highly detailed costume and makeup, Darrell invites viewers to be transported and elevated without sacrificing entertainment. A lover of ritual, iconography, fantasy, and storytelling, Darrell attempts to channel all these elements through costuming and paint on his body, coupled with live performance. He has exhibited and performed at the Park Avenue Armory, SFMOMA, Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Chashama, New York Academy of Art, Helsinki Night of Arts, The Smithsonian, Rubulad, The Mexico City Cabaret Festival, and received an NEA grant for his six week performative installation Under Glass and In Color.

This event was supported in part by the Steiner Visitor Lecture Grant from the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry, the Carnegie Mellon College of Fine Arts Deans office, IDeAte, and the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University.

Co-presented with Carnegie Mellon University, School of Art

A one-hour artist lecture will also occur on CMU campus for limited faculty, staff and students only, between 11:30am -12:30pm in the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry on April 1st. This event was made possible with support from the Steiner Visitor Lecture Grant and the CFA Dean’s Office. *RSVP link

Scott Andrew is the media designer for the upcoming production of the opera Looking At You, a drama that reimagines the morally complex love story of CASABLANCA in our age of total surveillance. When Dorothy lands her dream job as chief software engineer at a social media behemoth in Silicon Hills, she doesn’t expect her past will come crashing in as her ex-boyfriend Ethan becomes the world’s most famous whistleblower. Pursued by the U.S. government and at the mercy of whoever harbors him, Ethan’s only hope is to delete his fragile physical existence and upload his consciousness permanently to the cloud — but for that he needs the help of the woman he abandoned without explanation in order to expose a secret worldwide surveillance structure. Will Dorothy choose to save Ethan or to hold on to her shiny life by turning him in?

Two Nights Out Screening

Image

Image

Image

It was great organizing the @thedragonsisters visit to @carnegiemellon for a screening of their visual album ‘Two Nights Out’ on the facade of the college of fine arts. This event was a satellite of @transqlive and was made possible by the Sylvia and David Steiner Speaker Series @studioforcreativeinquiry, @cmuschoolofart, The Electronic Music Program @cmumusic, and The Opportunity Fund. Install by @cmuabtech

Two Nights Out is a visual EP featuring dynamic performances and original music created by The Dragon Sisters. This multimedia film is a deep dive into the sisters’ musical prophecies and creative aesthetic. It explores themes of relationships, non-binary gender expression, and toxic masculinity. Two Nights Out illustrates the many dualities of The Dragon Sisters as dance performers and rap artists; soulmates and collaborators; and bearers of historical trauma and activists. The piece is a three dimensional realization of their most recent music project, The Fine Print EP. It is a love letter to their community and their sisterhood.
